Course Overview

Job Services Australia staff who are not employed as counsellors often find themselves placed in a counselling role by accident as a result of issues or requests for help that arise from contact with job seekers in a range of settings. They feel they can’t simply refuse to help, but how do they respond? This training will focus on developing awareness and understanding as well as practical skills for the JSA Professional. All content is JSA specific and can be applied to any JSA office.

This workshop will equip staff with the skills necessary to effectively implement an informal counselling model as part of their interaction with job seekers presenting with a range of issues and needs. Participants are also provided with a range of tools and resources to assist in the case management and counselling processes

.Workshop Content

  • Identifying a range of basic counselling skills relevant to roles within JSA
  • Practice of a variety of communication skills including effective listening and questioning
  • Identifying personal and social factors which influence human behaviour
  • Understand the psychology behind unemployment
  • Understanding the importance of self awareness when dealing effectively with job seekers
  • Identify and analyse potential conflicts with job seekers
  • Developing a model for informal counselling
  • Appropriate assessment and referral
  • Understanding a variety of self care techniques
  • The importance of relationship building
